SA awarded Millions for Mental Health
Our Community Friends at The Center for Health Care Services Awarded Mental Health Funding Under Senate Bill 292 and House Bill 13
In January, Texas’ Health and Human Services Commission released an announcement informing the public of $27.5 million in grant awards that will support mental health services in Texas. This is wonderful news for our state and the agencies who work diligently to support mental health services. The grant is broken into two programming areas: Senate Bill 292-Mental Health Grant Program for Justice-Involved Individuals ($12.5 million) and House Bill 13 – Community Mental Health Grant Programs ($15 million) with both grants awarding funding to various agencies across our state.
Within Bexar County, we’re pleased to say that our friends at The Center for Health Care Services, along with community partners University Health System, Bexar County, City of San Antonio, NAMI and UT Health received funding in both grants. Funding from SB 292 will help our community divert residents away from costly jail and emergency room stays and into treatment programs that will help them lead productive lives. The proposal includes a 16-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit, additional staff at Central Magistration, a new Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) team, and additional fidelity training for the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. Funding from HB 13 will provide intensive case management services for individuals in the Recovery Connections Clinic – a clinic run by UT Health and University Health System that helps people transition from hospital-based psychiatric care to long-term mental health care in the community.
Other programs that CHCS offers to our community are nationally recognized. They include long term care, therapeutic justice, substance use disorder treatment and homeless services – all with trained staff who can find the most suitable program for each individual. Their children’s services are extensive as well, offering treatment programs to youth within their own clinics or facilities, or through collaborating with other agencies around Bexar County. The Center for Health Care Services has 17 clinics located throughout the San Antonio/Bexar County area, making it easier on all of us to access care, if needed.
Our staff recognizes that mental health plays a critical part in a person’s sexual health, and we’re glad to have partners that we can refer our clients to.
